ESA new astronauts REVEALED: Class of 17 includes 8 women and a British ‘parastronaut’ who lost his leg in a motorbike accident.

The ESA’s new class of career astronauts includes France’s Sophie Adenot, a helicopter test pilot, along with Pablo Alvarez Fernandez from Spain, Britain’s Rosemary Coogan, Belgian Raphael Liegeois and Marco Sieber from Switzerland.

Eleven reserve astronauts were also recruited, including Frenchman Arnaud Prost and Italians Anthea Comellini and Adrea Patassa.

These are the first new European astronaut recruits since 2009, chosen out of more than 22,500 applicants.
