Mission Press release:

XRAE – Extended Reality Aquarius Experiment

A crew of three people, led by SICSA Researcher Vittorio Netti, will be part of the APUS Analog Research Group (AARG) Paired In-situ Research Analog and Technology Evaluation (PIRATE) 1 mission at Aquarius Reef Base in Islamorada, Florida 4th-7th January 2024.

Aquarius Reef, established by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) (https://lnkd.in/e2H3yx5w) ( in 1986 is the world’s only active semi-autonomous research underwater laboratory. It is operated by FIU Florida International University (https://lnkd.in/emCScVbK) ( since 2013 and hosts NASA`s NEEMO missions.

The XRAE is organized in collaboration with Mars Planet Technologies and the Sasakawa International Center for Space Architecture (SICSA) on how the perception of confined and isolated spaces will affect astronaut psychology during lunar surface operations.

To simulate those operations, the XRAE crew will use biosensors and Virtual Reality headsets inside the underwater habitat, collecting important biometric data about the level of stress, focus, and effectiveness of the analog astronauts while performing a range of mission-specific tasks.
